Leavenworth, Kansas, often flies under the radar regarding travel destinations, but this charming town offers plenty for the curious traveler. Once the Gateway to the West, it is a treasure trove of unique experiences, from historical sites to scenic views. I hope you find these exciting things to do in Leavenworth, Kansas, something to hop off the highway for.
1. Tour a Working Military Base (Fort Leavenworth)
Start your journey with a visit toFort Leavenworth, one of the oldest active military bases in the United States and still a working Army installation. This base is steeped in history and offers guided tours that take you through its fascinating past.
You’ll get a firsthand look at the lives of soldiers who have served here and explore historic buildings and monuments. The fort’s rich heritage is sure to leave a lasting impression.
At the Lewis and Clark Center (command/general staff college), Iwas amazedby the flag-lined lobby alone. The beautiful stained glass panels, the photos and bios of Patton, Powell, MacArthur, Sherman, and Eisenhower lining the walls, and the Medal of Honor award displayed in a glass case all serve as powerful reminders of these military giants’ contributions.
Their presence is sure to inspire and command respect.
I lucked out by having Thomas Gray, the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command’s liaison, show me around the historic property.
2. See the Buffalo Soldier Memorial
While at Fort Leavenworth, don’t miss the Buffalo Soldier Memorial, created by Eddie Dixon. This poignant tribute honors the African American soldiers (9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments) who served in the U.S. Army during the Indian Wars, World War I, and beyond.
The memorial features a statue of a Buffalo Soldier on horseback and plaques that tell their incredible stories of bravery and service. It’s a moving experience that brings a significant piece of American history to life.
3. Learn About the Harvey Girls (National Fred Harvey Museum)
Step back in time at theNational Fred Harvey Museum, a tribute to the profound impact of the Harvey Girls. These pioneering women were not just instrumental, but the very backbone of Fred Harvey’s restaurants and hotels along the Santa Fe Railway. Their contributions marked a pivotal part of the hospitality revolution in the American West, inspiring generations to come.
This museum, located at 624 Olive Street, is open by appointment only and is situated in the former residence of Fred Harvey himself. It provides captivating insight into the lives and contributions of these women who left an indelible mark on history.
Despite ongoing renovations, the museum is a testament to its enduring spirit of innovation and dedication. Fred Harvey is one of my personal heroes.
Fun Fact:Frederick Henry Harvey founded the first restaurant chain in the U.S. around 1850.
Pro Tip: Leavenworth is also home to some awesome murals (like the one above) and a 28-block downtown that is beautiful and full of local shops. Look for Momo’s Knitting Nook, The Book Barn, and Queen’s Pantry Teas.
4. Soak Up the Missouri River Views
Leavenworth sits along the banks of the mighty Missouri River, and its scenic views are not to be missed. Stroll along the riverfront or relax in one of the many parks that dot the area. The tranquil waters and lush landscapes provide a perfect backdrop for picnics, photography, or simply unwinding as you watch the world go by.
Fun Fact: Activist Susan B. Anthony’s brother Daniel, publisher of the Leavenworth Times and town mayor in 1863, owned a house on the waterfront.

Located on Fort Leavenworth, this museum showcases an impressive collection of artifacts from the early days of the American frontier. The museum vividly depicts military life in the 19th and early 20th centuries, from old uniforms and weapons to detailed dioramas.
Ienjoyed the military vehicles, dating from the 1800s, and the wagons and carriages. An 1832 officer coat worn by General Henry Leavenworth is another museum treasure.Frontier Army Museum is a fascinating stop that provides deeper insights into the army’s role in shaping American history.
6. Explore the C.W. Parker Carousel Museum
Head over to theC.W. Parker Carousel Museumfor a touch of whimsy. This delightful museum celebrates the art and history of the carousel, featuring beautifully restored rides and fascinating exhibits. You can even take a spin on an antique carousel! It’s a joyful experience that will awaken your inner child and leave you smiling.
7. See a Famous U.S. Penitentiary
Leavenworth is also home to one of the most well-known prisons in the United States. The U.S. Penitentiary, Leavenworth, has housed many infamous inmates over the years, mostly while it was a maximum-security federal prison. Names like James Earl Ray (the assassin ofMartin Luther King), Panamanian Military Leader Manuel Noriega, and football player Michael Vick have spent time there.
While you can’t tour the stunning medium-security prison, you can visit the nearby museum that offers a glimpse into its storied past. It’s an intriguing stop that adds another layer to your understanding of the area’s history.
8. Eat Delicious Italian Food at Luigi’s 418
After soaking up some history, it’s time to indulge in some mouthwatering Italian cuisine.Luigi’s 418is a local favorite, known for its cozy atmosphere and delectable dishes. Whether craving classic pasta, a hearty meat entrée, or a fresh salad, Luigi’s offers something to satisfy every palate.
Two delicious meals to check out are the Tour, with Chicken Parmigiana, lasagna, and Fettuccine Alfredo, and the Pancheta, penne Alfredo with bacon and asparagus, thenbaked with mozzarella.
Don’t forget to try their famous tiramisu—the perfect way to end a delicious meal.
9. Tour the Carroll Mansion
End your Leavenworth trip with a tour of the 1880’s Carroll Mansion, a beautiful Victorian-era home that hasbeen meticulously preserved. The mansion offers guided tours that showcase its stunning architecture, impressive woodwork, stately stained glass, period furnishings, and intriguing history. It’s a step back in time that allows you to experience the elegance and charm of a bygone era.
The Museum also houses the Leavenworth County Historical Society and 30,000 glass plate negatives (old-school y’all), depicting over a century of Leavenworth history. Guided tours are available and take about an hour
