Lemon Grove Lions host tournament

The Lemon Grove Lions Club is hosting a Cornhole Tournament at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Lemon Grove VFW, 2885 Lemon Grove Ave. Entry fee is $35 per person; spectators are free. Proceeds will go toward the Fisher House, a charity and foundation that builds comfort homes where military and veterans families can stay for free while a loved one is in the hospital. The tournament will have four games minimum, round robin with single or double, elimination tournament to follow depending on number of players. There will also be food, beer and fun. Shop & Dine La Mesa on Saturday

The Marketplace at Lake Murray Village Shopping Center hosts “Shop & Dine La Mesa” from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at the center, Lake Murray Boulevard and Baltimore Drive. This free and family-friendly event is created by the La Mesa Chamber of Commerce to promote local businesses that receive no funding from the city. Activities include a classic car show with the Monday Nite Car Club, a blood drive with the American Red Cross bloodmobile, and an appearance by the Live Well San Diego mobile van. The San Diego Humane Society will have a booth where folks can meet a canine ambassador and learn about pet adoptions and services. Entertainment includes music from All Pro Live Sound & DJ, face painting, balloon artists and games. A blood drive with the American Red Cross is also part of the event. La Mesa Chamber hosts annual mixer

The La Mesa Chamber of Commerce invites the community to its annual mixer from 5:30-7 p.m. Wednesday at Hooleys Public House in Grossmont Center, 5500 Grossmont Center Drive. The chamber will host a raffle and have other surprises. Free to all chamber members; $15 for guests; $25 at-door fee. Reserve via www.lamesachamber.com or by emailing rsvp@lamesachamber.com.

Quartermania fundraiser returns

The Mt. Miguel High School Foundation brings back its Quartermania fundraiser from 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 1 at the school multicultural event center, 8585 Blossom Lane, Spring Valley. Cost of admission is $25, and all proceeds will go toward Mt Miguel High School Special Projects. The event will have preview shopping at 10:30 a.m., Quarter Auction from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., and a light lunch will be served at noon. Quartermania is a cross between an auction, a raffle and bingo. Tickets are on sale now and can be reserved by calling JoAnne Burke at (619) 316-3225 with credit/debit card info, or by mail with a check. Free health-oriented events from Sharp

Sharp Community Hospital hosts two free events this week:

  • A Caregiver Resource Awareness event will be held from 3-4:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Ronald Reagan Community Center, 195 E. Douglas Ave., El Cajon. Resources will be available from a variety of programs and organizations.
  • A Fall Prevention and Balance Screening event will be from 10 a.m.-noon Friday at the Grossmont Healthcare District, 9001 Wakarusa St., La Mesa. This free event includes advance care planning, a health fair, wellness assessments, door prizes, fall prevention awareness, exercise and movement demonstrations, and resources for seniors.

Blood drives

The San Diego Blood Bank hosts these donor opportunities:

  • 11:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday, Chick‑fil‑A, 9418 Mission Gorge Road, Santee. Donors will receive a free Chick-fil-A sandwich.
  • 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Friday, Petco, 8501 Fletcher Pkwy., La Mesa
  • 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Sept. 25, Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, 2766 Navajo Road, El Cajon, at the Parish Center
  • 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Sept. 25, Pathways Community Church, 9626 Carlton Hills Blvd., Santee

Those 17 and older, weighing at least 114 pounds and in good health, may be eligible to donate blood. A good meal and plenty of fluids are recommended before donating. Appointments strongly encouraged; photo ID required. Call (800) 469-7322 or visit SanDiegoBloodBank.org.
